UNESCO – urgent action needed on green schools
At least 96,000 schools worldwide have adopted green practices recommended by UNESCO, according to new data launched during Education Day at COP30. UNESCO has called on governments and the education sector to continue their efforts to integrate environmental issues into all school curricula and to reach the target of 50% of schools in each country being green by 2030.
“Education is one of the most powerful tools in global efforts to address the climate crisis,” UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education said. “We must ensure that every learner is equipped not only to understand the challenges but also to take action as part of the transition to a greener, more sustainable society.”
The data were presented at the COP30 Ministerial Roundtable on Greening Education, co-hosted by Camilo Santana, Brazil’s Minister of Education, and UNESCO.
